I just this moment commented on a picture of two nude girls with legs wide apart smoking different pipes (big fancy paraphernalia type)

The exact phrasing was
"but glamorizing smoking in any way with young people was outlawed for advertisers years ago... maybe that's a good rule to follow even for personal hobbyist pictures too- whatever additives or fancy pipes, it's still a pretty unhealthy activity. the only significant cause of heart disease in women under 40 and implicated in many cancers. I have personal family experience of the results, which can be pretty horrible. looks so harmless and yet can be devastating to lives down the line"

I thought it was a straightforward comment about smoking.  But I got an immediate reply
"that sort of comment well get you blocked" and being blocked.

It's as if some sensitive person feels  you're not allowed to mention smoking as a dangerous activity that kills?  someone really really sensitive about smoking?  Is it acceptable in 2012 to say in public that we shouldn't associate young healthy sexy people with the habit?

Apparently it's as controversial to mention smoking as it is to photograph it and display it on dA. Heh. I guess everyone's going to have their opinion, and blocking you for it is a bit silly, but so is commenting on it as if it's the first piece of artwork to depict such an act. I don't know when the deviation was uploaded, but it's rather apropos all things considered, as two states just legalized marijuana....

Many people, many opinions.
Some of the people are unable to deal with the existence of many opinions.
I'm heavily anti-smoking, but I'm also totally okay with people talking about it or displaying it etc.
I'm kinda okay even with it being advertised, as long as all the warnings are explicit and easily visible.
The block? Pft, I've been set on ignore for equally non-malicious comments and the like.

Don't worry, be happy.

Don't have enough information to know whether the response to you was appropriate to the issuer or not. We don't know the context of the image or its title.

this effin world has gone off the deep end with regards to politcal correctness and being offended. i'm sorry, it's not against the law to offend or even insult someone. people need to grow a pair and accept others opinions/criticisms/etc. this sensitivity crap is just a bunch of bullshit. we are teaching this young generation that; "no matter what, you're right in your own special way". NO, *in big RED ink* you're wrong, but it's ok to be wrong too...that's how you LEARN.

Although I think whoever blocked you was a bit silly, I think that perhaps it's unnecessary to mention smoking being dangerous or commenting that perhaps someone shouldn't use it in their art - people already know it's not healthy. I say live and let live. A few years ago there was a whole art-magazine entitled 'Women smoking' or something of the sort. Just think of it as another prop, you feature bondage in your images and let's not forget that some women are hurt badly by individuals who take it too far. Most things can be harmful when moderation is not observed. My two-cents. Cheers

Blocking you seems childish, as does your comment.

A long time ago I learned that in the comment space most people ONLY want complements not comments or criticism, they want pats on the back and that is all, and if they don't get what they want they either block the comment or completely block the author of the comment. To my way of thinking it only lets me know how childish they are. Soooooooooo my advice to you is...don't worry about it.

I think glamorizing smoking and making it the centerpiece for something can be negative and it's not very creative or artistic, and it's especially no good if it's involving minors. But there are ways of having a piece of art with smoking and what not included in it to go along with the creative theme in the artwork. It's a fine line indeed because if you were to not make art including anything that was bad for your health, you would have some boring art (I'm not saying all art that doesn't have those things is boring by the way). I've seen some art that included smoking in it that was very creative and not really glamorizing it like an advertisement or anything, and I think stuff like that is fine.

I think you are right that “glamorizing smoking in any way” should be avoided, no matter what the age of the model is.

I believe i saw that photo somewhere on DA, i thought the colorful pipes and nice lighting an beautiful attractive models made the photo...I know in the asian countrys women have learned to use their labia muscles and smoke a pipe or cigarette and blow smoke rings from the vagina too...I dont see any D.A. rules prohibiting smoke rings blown from vagina just rules for sex toy penetration and erections

If the government was really on our site, they would immediately outlaw smoking and legalize marijuana.

Cannabis oil therapy cures cancer. The smoke that creates it is still legal.

I'm with you 100%. I will admit, it's hot to see a naked chick smoking, but the cig is not what makes her hot.

Oh and, the big reason we even have this notion of "chicks who smoke are cool and independent and hot and whatever" goes back to Sigmund Freud's cousin, who led campaigns in connecting smoking to feminism. [link] That's creepy.

Some people simply look for reasons to get offended... I don't think there is anybody that doesn't know that smoking is bad for you, but at the same time, getting uptight, and blocking someone for pointing it out is... well... a bit childish. (now I'm wondering who it could have been... I've only ever been blocked by one person ever here, and it was due to the fact that a model had told a story about unsafe working conditions, and what should be done about it... I gave my commentary about how unsafe working conditions are unacceptable, never knowing who the photographer was that she was talking about, and that photographer ended up getting pissed off, and blocked me, and anyone else that commented on the model's journal... so, no big loss there...)
